B107-O - Southwest Ledge Lighthouse

Crow River Products

Footprint 6 1/2" sq. x 14" high

Southwest Ledge Lighthouse is located off the shore of New Haven, CT

It's Second Empire Victorian architecture with it's round base makes it unique among lighthouses

Southwest Ledge is a dangerous rock formation a mile offshore on the east side of the main channel into New Haven, Connecticut harbor. The lighthouse was one of the first in the nation to be built on a cylindrical iron foundation. The round foundation allowed floating ice to drift around it in the winter. The architecture of the light is unique. It is eight-sided, with Second Empire detailing and a mansard roof. It is topped with an octagonal lantern room.

A lighthouse super structure was on display at the Centennial exposition in Philadelphia in 1876. This structure was intended for the Southwest Ledge in CT, however it went to Delaware where it became the Ship John Shoal Light and an identical tower went to CT. A model of "Ship John Shoal Lighthouse" can also be built from this kit. It is painted completely red including the caisson.

In addition to layouts or dioramas, it will make a beautiful stand alone model for mantel or any type of display shelf.

Instructions and Drawings included.
